What it is
Periodontal disease destroys the bone that holds teeth in. It does it slowly, without pain, and it does not reverse on its own — but it does stop when it is treated.
Treatment starts with a full chart: pocket depths at six points per tooth, bleeding scores, recession and mobility. That baseline decides what is needed and gives us something to measure against three months later. Without it, treatment is guesswork with an instrument.
Most cases respond to thorough non-surgical cleaning below the gumline, carried out under local anaesthetic across one or more visits, followed by a supportive interval that is usually three or four months rather than six. Where pockets stay deep after that, we discuss surgical options honestly rather than repeating the same cleaning indefinitely.

Common questions
Good To Know
- Is gum disease reversible?
- Gingivitis — inflammation without bone loss — is fully reversible. Bone that has already been lost does not grow back, but the disease can be stopped and the remaining bone kept.
- Why do I need to come every three months?
- Because the bacteria repopulate a deep pocket in roughly that time. The interval is set from your own readings, and it lengthens if the numbers improve.
- Will my gums stop bleeding?
- In most cases yes, within a few weeks of proper cleaning and better home care. Bleeding that persists after that is a sign we need to look again rather than push harder.
