What counts as an emergency
Dental pain does not keep office hours, and it does not improve on its own. If you are not sure whether what you have counts as urgent, phone and ask — that is exactly the call we would rather you made.

What to do right now
Knocked-out tooth
Handle it by the crown, never the root. Put it straight back in the socket if you can; if not, keep it in milk.
Call immediately — the first 30 minutes decide whether the tooth survives.
Severe toothache
Ordinary painkillers as directed on the packet. Avoid very hot or cold food, and do not put aspirin against the gum.
Same day. Pain that wakes you at night usually means the nerve is involved.
Facial swelling
Do not apply heat. Note whether the swelling is spreading toward the eye or the floor of the mouth.
Immediately. Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing is A&E, not a dental practice.
Broken or chipped tooth
Keep any fragment in milk. Rinse gently with warm salt water and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum if it is cutting your tongue.
Same day if it hurts or is sharp; within a few days if it is small and painless.
Lost crown or filling
Keep the crown. Temporary cement from a pharmacy will hold it for a day or two — never superglue.
Within a day or two, sooner if the tooth is sensitive.
Bleeding that will not stop
Bite firmly on clean gauze for 20 uninterrupted minutes. Do not keep checking it — that is what restarts it.
Call if it has not settled after 30 minutes of firm pressure.
Nobody plans a dental emergency. The practical measure of one is how quickly it stops hurting.
